Giro d'Italia 2026

A three-week route book with big mountain days, transfer rhythm, and late-race swings.

Giro d’Italia 2026 crosses Bulgaria from the Black Sea to Sofia before the first rest day, then turns Italy into a slow-burn elimination race with Blockhaus, the 42 km Massa TUDOR time trial, and a final week that stacks Carì, Alleghe, and Piancavallo before Rome. The official route hub frames the full course at 3,468 km and 48,700 metres of climbing.

Stage overview

A flat opener with a double Sozopol circuit, two passes over Cape Agalina, and a slightly rising final kilometre into Burgas.

  1. Nessebar to the Sozopol approach The first part of the day is mostly about settling the bunch and keeping the sprint trains out of trouble before the road starts looping south of Burgas.
  2. Double Sozopol and Cape Agalina circuit The official stage page builds the middle of the opener around a 22 km circuit covered twice, with the Cape Agalina climb giving the pure sprinters one repeated point of stress.
  3. Fast return to Burgas Once the second lap is done, the road speeds back along the coast to Burgas, but the last kilometre rises slightly and the final corner only arrives at 300 metres, so the finish still rewards precise lead-out timing.

Opening stage spotlight

A closer look at the Black Sea opener once you want more than the stage list.

Overview

Stage 1 overview

A spoiler-safe look at the Black Sea opener.

The Burgas opener is flat on paper, but the official stage page is more specific than that. After the start in Nessebar, the race heads south toward Sozopol, covers a 22 km circuit twice, climbs Cape Agalina on each lap, and then returns to Burgas for a city-centre finish whose last kilometre rises slightly before the final corner at 300 metres.
